Topic: Newspapers in the North King Country

Topic type:

Readers in the Otorohanga and Waitomo districts will be familiar with the Waitomo News, but this was not the first newspaper to be read in the region.

The region's first newspaper was The Kawhia Settler founded an run by Mr E.H. Schnackenberg. He was the son of Reverend Schnackenberg, a pioneer missionary at Mokau and later Te Waitere.

The Taumarunui Press was the first inland newspaper to be published in the region, with its first issue circulated on 14th September 1906.

More familiar to locals today, the King Country Chronicle (first published on 26th October 1906) and Otorohanga Times (established in 1912) served the Waitomo and Otorohanga districts respectively for many years.

In 1980 these two papers were merged to become the Waitomo News.
