Dr. Samuel Zobel was Te Kuiti's first doctor.

Dr. Samuel Zobel was the first doctor appointed to serve the Waitomo District. Born in Sofia, Romania Dr. Zobel graduated from the University of London with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1904, Bachelor of Surgery in 1905 and Doctor of Medicine in 1907. He arrived in Auckland in June 1907 and gave notice to the Registrar of Medical Practitioners for his name to be placed on the Medical Register on 25 June 1907. His registration was granted on 26 July 1907. Dr. Zobel arrived in Te Kuiti on 14 January 1908 and began consultating from Mr E Kerr's boarding house (The Grand Hotel) having secured a guaranteed income for two years. He died in his residence on 15 September 1936 following a serious operation in Auckland and is buried in Area D, Row 7 of the old Te Kuiti Cemetery in Mangarino Rd.
